Lexus NX Gets New Looks and Tech to Go With Updated Performance

Lexus’ NX lineup is far from dated, nor has it been so maligned by experts that it simply had to undergo a reworking. Despite that, the NX will get a few mild visual tweaks, some new tech, and some performance upgrades for 2018.

Up front, the upper section of the Spindle Grille is tighter, giving it a bolder look, while the lower bumper gets a thinner splitter, redesigned and repositioned fog lights, and larger outer vents. While these changes are not major, they are enough to give the already bold NX and even more aggressive appearance.

Around back, the NX gains a new bumper with a new insert, updated tailpipe trim, elongated taillights with revised black surrounds, and on the hybrid model, a slotted lower bumper with L-shaped satin-chrome borders. Buyers will also find a new foot-activated power liftgate.

The NX also gains a few updates inside. Here, you will find new control interfaces, a new available 10.3-inch screen, a simplified HVAC control panel with just four toggle switches, a cleaner and simpler analog clock that is now satellite controlled and auto adjusts to changing time zones, and a metallic satin finish on virtually all the controls and switches.

Lexus also touched the one area that nearly everyone complains about: the Remote Touch Interface. No, it didn’t eliminate this annoyingly ineffective system, but it did make it larger and easier to use. Lexus also made the RTI’s wrist rest larger, stretched the wireless charging pad for larger phones, and repositioned the USB ports and upped their amperage for quicker charging.

The NX will not undergo any powertrain updates, as the 200t continues with its 2.0-liter turbo engine and the 300h continues with its 2.5-liter four-pot and electric motor. What has changed, though, are its springs, stabilizer bars, and bushings for quicker turn-in. The dampers also get an upgrade, making the ride a little smoother. Finally, the biggest under-the-skin change is the addition of Lexus’ new Adaptive Variable Suspension system, which has 650 compression and damping adjustments.

Finally, the NX will gain standard Lexus Safety System+, which includes the Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control System, Lane Departure Alert, and Automatic High Beam.

There is no mention of when the updated 2018 Lexus NX will hit showrooms, but it should come soon. Stay tuned for a more precise release date and pricing updates.
