Though it resisted and even poked fun at BMW a bit for switching to turbocharged four-cylinder engines in its sedans, Lexus has finally seen the forced-induction light. The Japanese luxury automaker has just revealed its first-ever turbocharged sedan, the IS 200t.

The IS 200t looks, smells, and feels the same as the V-6-powered IS sedans, but its powerplant is far different. This 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder puts out 180 kW (241 horsepower) and 350 Nm (258 pound-feet) of torque, making it significantly more powerful than the current IS 250, which produces just 204 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque.

Besides being more powerful than the IS 250, the IS 200t will easily best its V-6-powered sibling, thanks to its 40.4 mpg rating in Europe. In the U.S., the IS 250 gets up to 30 mpg highway.

This 2.0-liter engine sends the power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed auto transmission with paddle shifters. This transmission also varies its shifting according to the car’s G forces. For example, it’ll downshift under hard braking or hold a gear longer through a turn for optimal acceleration when you exit the turn.

The turbocharged engine and advanced automatic transmission team up to create a pretty quick ride. The IS 200t can hit 62 mph in seven seconds, besting the IS 250 by 1.1 seconds. Top speed chimes in at 143 mph, which also bests the IS 250 by 3 mph.

So, we know that the IS 200t is faster, quicker, more fuel efficient, and lighter than the IS 250, but the final piece of the puzzle – its price – we’ll have to wait for. Currently, Lexus has announced only U.K. availability, but I am confident that we’ll see it in the U.S. too.
