Kia to Have a Tiny Crossover of its Own by 2017

The subcompact crossover utility vehicle market is booming, and Kia wants in on the action. At least that’s what Motoring.com.au heard from one Kia exec.

Kia Australia’s Damien Meredith told the Aussie site that Kia is interested in building a tiny people hauler that would do battle with the likes of the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V, and we could get our first look at it before the end of 2016. According to Meredith, this CUV would be based on the same platform as the soon-to-be-redesigned Rio and both would be built in the brand’s South Korean plant.

Unfortunately, that is all the deeper the executive got, but there is speculation that this CUV could draw inspiration from the Provo concept that Kia showed off at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. That makes sense, given the Provo is slated to be the inspiration to the new Rio. Sure, Kia will need to do a little nipping and tucking to make this body work as a CUV, but I think it’ll look amazing.

Motoring claims that the new CUV could hit the show circuit in time for the 2016 LA Auto Show and will hit showrooms in the third quarter of 2017—shortly after the new Rio.

Given we are already halfway through 2016, we should start learning more about this upcoming model very soon, so stay tuned for update.
