When Kia revealed the redesigned Optima, it left its hybrid variant of the table initially. Today, at the Chicago Auto Show, Kia has completed the sedan’s lineup with the unveiling of its hybrid and plug-in hybrid models.

The hybrid models roll in with the same general look as the new Optima, but with tweaks to their aerodynamics to enhance efficiency. The standard hybrid and plug-in hybrid models have unique grilles with active shutters that open and close at various speeds, unique front aprons, beveled rear bumpers, more streamlined rear diffusers that shroud the exhaust, and special wheels to keep drag down to an impressive 0.24 Cd.

The interior of the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Optima are basically identical to the base Optima. The only noticeable differences are that Kia replaced the tach with an eco gauge and added more soft-touch materials. The plug-in model does get one exclusive feature, and that is the ability to search for charging stations via its UVO system.

While the plug-in and traditional hybrid versions of the Optima look quite similar, their under-hood bits differ significantly. The Optima Hybrid comes standard with a 2.0-liter GDI four-cylinder that produces 154 horsepower. This engine mates to a 35 kW electric motor with a 1.62 kWh battery that pushes the system output to 193 horsepower. This system automatically shifts between EV mode and hybrid to assure you’re getting the best fuel economy—Kia failed to mention its EV range, but I suspect it’ll be around a mile at speeds under 30 mph.

As for the plug-in hybrid Optima, this model uses the same 154-horsepower 2.0-liter engine, but it pairs with a more potent 50 kW motor with a 9.8 kWh battery. Like the hybrid model, the plug-in version automatically switches from gas to EV to hybrid mode, but unlike the base hybrid, this model has a 27-mile EV range after a three-hour charge on 240 volts of juice.

The Optima Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid will arrive in showrooms in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Kia. Prices will roll out just before they arrive.
