Here’s The World’s First Electric Pickup Truck

Beating Tesla to the punch with the first plug-in pickup truck, Workhorse has finally unveiled it’s much-anticipated W-15. And already, this commercially-aimed vehicle has generated thousands of letters of intent from companies eager to get their hands on fleets of various sizes.

Not only do we now know exactly what the Workhorse W-15 looks like, we have the “preliminary specs.” According to the company, the truck gets 75 MPGe and can go 80 miles on a full charge. Peak output comes in at 460 horsepower. It won’t be slow, either, with a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds.

An onboard gasoline-powered range extender will help ensure crew members aren’t stuck out in the middle of nowhere. So instead of being purely electric, like Tesla’s much-anticipated pickup, this one works more like a Chevy Volt. That means in a pinch you can stop and gas up, instead of plugging in and waiting for a while. Total range is estimated at 310 miles, so it works about like a normal vehicle, if you’re traveling far. Also, you can load up to 2,200 pounds in the payload and tow up to 5,500 pounds. In other words, this is a light duty pickup, not anything heavy duty in the least.

Other features includes a “true” all-wheel-drive system that’s controlled by two motors, all kinds of driver assistance systems, and a standard double cab. A 7.2 kw power outlet will be handy for plugging in all kinds of tools, and it works when the truck isn’t running.

You can expect the first wave of deliveries to begin in 2018. The estimated cost at this point is $52,500.
