Ford Ups the Torque and Gears in the 2017 F-150

Second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine

The Ford F-150 is constantly revolutionizing the pickup truck realm including the recent addition of a twin-turbo V-6 engine and the introduction of an aluminum body. Now, with the 2017 model year fast approaching, Ford has announced a few changes to the F-150 that’ll once again push pickups into a new realm.

On a whole, the 2017 F-150 will be nearly identical to the 2016 model as there are no outward changes in the works. Where the bestselling pickup will see significant changes is under its skin.

The first big change for the new year is the introduction of the second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. This new engine makes use of a new two-part fuel injection system that’s comprised of one injector at the intake port and one inside the cylinder, new turbochargers with electronically actuated wastegates, and hollow camshafts in a new roller-finger valvetrain for reduced weight. All of these mods add up to the same 365 horsepower, but torque is increased to 450 pound-feet—a jump of 30 pound-feet relative to the 2016 model. That is a diesel-rivalling twisting force right there.

Pairing with this new V-6 powerplant is an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission. This cog-swapper helps improve acceleration and fuel economy without compromising the F-150’s towing and payload capacities. What’s more, this transmission is actually 2 pounds lighter than the six-cog unit it replaces.

Pricing isn’t available just yet, but we do know that the 2017 F-150 will hit showrooms in the fall of this year.
