Ford Reveals the 8-Second Mustang Cobra Jet

For the 50th anniversary of the Mustang Cobra Jet, Ford Performance Parts has cooked up a very special version of the car. According to the automaker, this will be the quickest version of the pony car ever made. How does the mid-8-second range sound for the quarter mile? It’s also supposed to hit an excess of 150 mph at the finish line.

To work this magic, Ford Performance Parts took the Coyote V-8 and slapped on a supercharger. The forced induction pushes engine displacement to 5.2 liters. Instead of the independent rear suspension, the Cobra Jet sports a unique four-link setup and 9-inch solid axle.

Because it’s a purpose-built dragster, the Mustang Cobra Jet also comes with a NHRA-certified roll cage, special Weld Racing wheels, Racetech FIA seats, and coil-over suspension that’s tuned for drag racing. It will be legal for NHRA events, plus some National Muscle Car Association and National Mustang Racers Association classes.

Only 68 of these new Cobra Jets are going to be built. If you’re lucky enough to get one, you can order it in white or red. You can add 50th anniversary exterior graphics and badges.

We’ll get the finalized specs on the car this summer, when Ford opens up the order process.
