The 2015 Ford Edge hits dealers in the early part of 2015, and it will be packing a new twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. According to the Blue Oval, the new engine will provide greater driving enjoyment through increased performance and improved response.

Helping make the new four-cylinder EcoBoost engine even more tempting for car shoppers is the ability to pair it with all-wheel drive, which was not an option for the previous generation. Buyers will also be able to tack on a towing package that allows the vehicle to pull a 3,500-pound trailer. In other words, going with the smaller turbocharged engine will make the crossover more utilitarian than before.

A number of design changes will be introduced with the new engine. One of these will be the addition of a twin-scroll turbocharger and an integrated exhaust manifold that has been optimized for the forced induction setup. A new wastegate will help with managing boost and torque more accurately. New pistons help augment the compression ratio from 9.3:1 to 9.7:1. Rounding out the improvements will be an active oil control system and a high-pressure direct-injection fuel system.

Official numbers haven’t been released yet, but the new twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine should be more powerful and efficient. Peak output is estimated at about 245 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. The EPA has not released any fuel economy figures, but they are anticipated to be significantly higher than with the previous engine. Hard numbers should come out in the near future.

Ford believes that over 30 percent of all Edge models sold will come with the EcoBoost engine because of all the improvements. That’s a huge shift, considering that under 5 percent of Edge models sold during 2014 were outfitted with the EcoBoost engine.

Instead of using a European-built 2.0-liter EcoBoost, Ford will make the new engine in the United States at the Cleveland Engine Plant No.1, which is located in Brook Park, Ohio.
