Faraday Future Struggling For Survival
It was supposed to forever change how everyone viewed and interacted with cars, but Faraday Future is in struggle to secure its own destiny. After a downright embarrassing concept reveal during CES back in January, the company has suffered a series of big setbacks, with many wondering if it will survive much longer.
First the battery engineer left for greener shores. Then Faraday’s Chinese finances for the production facility in Nevada suffered a hiccup, pushing the plans back. Now, several of the automaker’s former executives has talked with The Guardian and revealed there’s far more trouble inside the company.
The original article in The Guardian is pretty long, but it basically tells about how Faraday managed to go from planning to have a fully-functioning prototype EV at CES to spending $2 million for a non-functioning and completely weird-looking concept for the event.
The original plan called for a fully-autonomous electric SUV, which probably would’ve wowed everyone. It also would’ve retailed for about $150,000, which admittedly is a little steep, even when compared to the Tesla Model X. That might still be what Faraday is aiming to do, but the plan sounds foolish.
Supposedly, Faraday Future is looking to launch thirteen different models that all ride on the same platform, which was shown off at CES. If the company can get it together, that would certainly be impressive, but at this point things don’t look so good.
Also included in the report are accounts of cultural clashes between American managers and their Chinese counterparts, who might not understand the North American market at all. Some of the powers that be in China even wanted to call the automaker Fara Faro, a name consumers here would’ve felt completely alienated by.
Thanks to economic turmoil in China, Faraday Future’s finances are pretty shaky. Apparently Nevada is spooked by this, which has put the whole factory project on ice, at least temporarily. The automaker might have to buy autonomous tech off a competitor like Google. Apparently onboard entertainment features are also giving the company fits.
