Volkswagen recently revealed the updated Golf, and it was only a matter of time before the R variant got in on this action. That time is now – in Europe, at least – as the Euro-spec Golf R has debuted.

It requires a careful eye to spot the differences between this and the previous Golf R. For those who aren’t well versed in the Golf R, the changes include new headlights and a reworked front bumper that includes new center and outer air inlets, and a more stylish splitter. Sure, they’re small changes, but they’re definitely welcome ones.

The changes inside the cabin remain unknown, for now, but reports indicate they will include a new infotainment system with a larger screen and gesture control, and a 12-inch screen in the place of the instrument cluster.

The biggest change to most gearheads is under the Golf R’s hood. Here lies the same 2-liter turbocharged engine as before, but with its wick cranked to 310 PS (306 horsepower) and 400 Nm (295 pound-feet) of torque – these are improvements of 10 PS (10 horsepower) and 20 Nm (15 pound-feet). This added power drops its 0-to-62 time to 4.6 seconds.

Though these changes are for European models only at this point, we anticipate them making their way to the U.S.-spec models in the coming months.
