File this one in the “I never saw that coming” drawer: DeLorean Motor Company will begin producing new DMC-12s after more than a three-decade break. What’s more, this won’t be some chintzy modernized model that shares little more than a name with its predecessor. Instead, the new DMC-12 will reportedly be identical to the original with a few mild tweaks for the modern era.

So, you may be wondering how a 30-year-old car can just roll off the production line without much of an issue. This all traces back to a new law that the fed passed late in 2015 that allows small automakers—those who produce fewer than 5,000 cars annually—to produce up to 325 ready-to-drive vehicles without all the red tape larger manufacturers have to go through. The only caveat is that the new cars must use an engine that is both EPA and CARB certified.

According to the report from Automobile Magazine, DeLorean Motor Company looks to restart production of the DMC-12 in 2017. The engine of choice seems to be a V-6, but DeLorean is still courting possible stablemates for its limited run of its movie-star rig. What DMC did announce is that the engine will produce somewhere between 350 and 400 horsepower, making the DMC-12 the performer everyone wished it would be in the 1980s. DMC Vice President, James Espey, did mention that the engine should be in place by March.

Other than the engine, some modern safety bits, modern cabin amenities, and new electronics, the DMC-12 will look just like it did 30-plus years ago—brushed stainless body and gull-wing doors included.

As the law stipulates, DMC will limit production to just 325 units. Each one will run just shy of $100k.

We’ll bring you the official specs and details on the resurrected DMC-12 once they roll out later this year, so stay tuned.
