DeLorean Motor Company Rolls out its First DMC-12 Ad
In late January, DeLorean Motor Company announced that a new law passed will now permit it to reboot the iconic—and what some may call infamous—DMC-12. Today, the one-time replacement-part manufacturer released the first ad for the DMC-12’s upcoming re-release. You can check out the video below.
The video is long and pretty non-descript, but it does reconfirm the fact that the new DMC-12s will look and feel just like the original—stainless-steel bodies, gullwing doors, 1980s interior, and all. What the video fails to confirm is what engine will power this rig.
As we already know, the new law that allows DeLorean to start production again requires it to use an engine that meets today’s emission and fuel-consumption rules. With this, DeLorean is courting several potential suitors, including Ford and General Motors, and is reportedly going back and forth between using a V-6 or a V-8. I think a tuned version of Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 would be ideal, given space constraints, but something about a snarling GM V-8 in the DMC-12 is tempting.
No matter the direction DeLorean Motor Company goes with its powertrain, this is bound to be an in-demand rig. The DMC-12 has ravenous fans, many of which likely wouldn’t bat an eye at its anticipated near-$100k price tag. This will likely lead to all 325 examples built per year being presold months in advance of its actual release.
We should learn more about this rebooted DMC-12 in just about a month, as DMC Vice President, James Espey, anticipates having the engine finalized by March 2016.
