Daimler Heading to Court for its Dirty Diesels

Back in 2016, a group of investors and municipal pension funds filed a lawsuit against Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, claiming the automaker hid its excessive diesel emissions by Mercedes vehicles. Of course, Daimler denied all accusations, and attempted to have them thrown out. Well, apparently a judge thought different.

According to a report from Automotive News, a federal judge in California will allow the class-action suit to proceed.

Of course, Daimler is denying any wrongdoing. According to the report, Daimler spokesperson Han Tjan said, “We consider these class action suits to lack merit. We will defend ourselves by all legal means.” To date, there has been no evidence that Mercedes-Benz used any cheat devices to manipulate diesel emissions, so there is still the burden of proof lingering over the plaintiff’s heads.

Should this lawsuit prove that Mercedes-Benz used these sort of devices, it could open a whole can of worms, just like it did for Volkswagen and FIAT Chrysler Automobiles. The former is stuck paying billions after covering up its scandal. Given how hard Daimler is pressing against these accusations, the guillotine could come down equally hard on its head.

We’ll continue monitoring this developing situation and bring you updates as they become available. Stay tuned!
