Daimler Emissions Scandal Just Blew Up

Daimler’s own Dieselgate scandal just took a turn for the worse, much worse. German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung broke the news that a search warrant in Daimler’s homeland indicates the company might have sold over a million vehicles with illegal diesel emissions levels. That’s a pretty good chunk, if this proves to be true.

This comes two months after authorities in Stuttgart raided various Daimler facilities, looking for info about alleged emissions cheating. It sounds like they found something interesting.

What we know is the one million vehicles in question were sold in Europe and the United States from 2008 to 2016. The allegations include Daimler installing cheat devices to trick emissions testing equipment. This all sounds eerily familiar.

All kinds of things could happen from here. If German authorities, or even the government in the US find evidence of a cheat, expect a huge fine, plus conditions like what Volkswagen gets to fulfill now. A buyback might be in the cards. Of course, the Dieselgate settlement is pushing Volkswagen to create more EVs and address charging solutions.
