Chrysler Considering Making The 300 FWD

Soon, the Chrysler 300 could become a front-wheel-drive car, ditching the current rear-wheel-drive setup. That’s according to an interview Reuters had with FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne, who has a history of saying all sorts of interesting things.

Why would FCA even think of doing such a thing? The reason is the new Pacifica. Moving production of the 300 to the same plant where the minivan is made is for some reason under consideration.

Instead of explaining why FCA would water down the Chrysler 300, as the reporter pressed for more information Marchionne tried to downplay the whole thing. He said he was just talking about possibilities and not “a commitment.”

What makes this whole thing weirder is the fact that the Chrysler 300 isn’t exactly using a platform all by its lonely self – that would be a reason to transition over to one that’s shared with the Pacifica. In case you don’t know, the Dodge Challenger and Charger also use the LX platform, which has its roots in the old DaimlerChrysler collaboration.

So now people are wondering if FCA also wants to make the Challenger and Charger front-wheel-drive cars as well? That seems inconceivable. It could be that the company feels making the 300 completely different would somehow up its appeal. After all, the Toyota Avalon and other competitors are pretty boring front-wheel-drive machines.
