Chevy Planning Aggressive Camaro Push

If you think the ZL1 1LE is the pinnacle of Camaro performance, you’re wrong. Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for the Camaro line, told Hagerty at the Detroit Auto Show he wants more, all to show Dodge and Ford who’s boss. Oh, you’ve gotta love the rivalry!

First off, that 7:16.04 time the ZL1 1LE ran at the ‘Ring isn’t good enough. Oppenheiser said he wants a Camaro that can do it in 7 minutes or less. To knock off 16 seconds from that most impressive time would be quite the task, but Oppenheiser sounds serious about doing it.

He also mentioned a “drag pack” for the Camaro, we can only imagine it would be something that provides more than 707 horsepower, to throw out a random number. Ford’s already promising something of that nature for the next GT500, so Chevy of course wants to beat that already.

These new models and packs sound expensive, and they’ll likely be toys for those with lots of cash. People who can afford a base model aren’t getting left out of all the fun. Oppenheiser said his team is working alongside Chevrolet Performance on some new components that would upgrade the turbocharged four-banger.
