Everyone knows the Chevrolet Malibu is boring rental-car fodder most people would be embarrassed to own. It’s okay to admit it, but there’s still hope. GM has acknowledged the problem, which is the first step, and seems to be doing something about it. The automaker recently teased the 2016 Malibu, which constitutes a complete redesign of the midsize sedan.

If you’re thinking that the Malibu was redesigned not that long ago, you’re right. The current generation launched as a 2013 model but was a sales dud, despite high hopes. GM didn’t give up and the car was overhauled for 2014, but sales continued to lag. The midsize sedan segment is fiercely competitive, thanks to the likes of the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and several other popular models.

The 2016 Chevy Malibu is built on the GM Epsilon platform, which internally is called E2XX. Other upcoming vehicles that will use the same platform include the next Buick Regal and LaCrosse. Backseat space has been problematic for the Malibu, so the wheelbase is growing by four inches. At the same time, the sedan is shedding about 300 pounds, thanks in large part to high-strength steel being used in the structure. The weight loss will help the new model be more efficient and handle better.

Spy photos of the 2016 Malibu have been floating around for a while. When compared to the teaser image GM released, it’s obvious that the sedan will be much sleeker than before. Some are even comparing the profile to the Audi A7, which would definitely be a dramatic move. Chevrolet plans a slow striptease of the Malibu, leaking out more details every week until the full reveal, which is set for the New York Auto Show. That means we only have a few weeks until GM shows off what could be a revolutionary new model.
