Chevrolet is finally showing off the second-generation Spark, which will launch as a 2016 model. The minicar has been fully redesigned, introducing a more sophisticated design, improved powertrain efficiency, more on-board technology and better safety than was available before. All of that is supposed to translate into a higher-end experience with some features competing models don’t even offer.

The Spark is actually 1.6 inches shorter, which helps with aerodynamics. Headroom is supposed to be unaffected by the lower height. The wheelbase is actually a little longer. Overall, the structure of the car is stronger, which Chevrolet says improves handling and makes the interior quieter than in the previous generation.

The 2016 Chevy Spark is powered by a completely new Ecotec 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine that’s good for 98 horsepower. The head and block are made of aluminum, plus the exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head, helping keep the car’s weight down. The engine is paired with a manual transmission or CVT. GM estimates that the Spark will get about 40 mpg on the highway, which is pretty decent.

When it comes to technology, the Spark can actually be pretty well outfitted. The next-gen Chevrolet MyLink system comes with a 7-inch color touchscreen, which is a nice touch. There’s also more physical buttons for common features, like the sound system volume and environmental controls. Buyers will be able to add lane departure warning, side blind spot alert and forward collision alert as a way to help avoid accidents. A whopping ten airbags come standard, as does a rearview camera.

Gone is the “motorcycle-inspired” gauge cluster, and in its place is a dot-matrix LCD cluster. Also available will be GM’s OnStar with a 4G LTE built-in WiFi hotspot, which allows people in or near the car to access high-speed Internet while on the go.

Undoubtedly, the second-generation Spark will be a success like the original. So far, the model has racked up over one million sales around the world.
