Chevrolet has stated that the upcoming 2015 Corvette ZO6 will be the most capable Corvette for track racing in the brand’s entire history. Chief among the reasons for the superiority of the C7 ZO6 is the supercharged V8 engine that is expected to produce no less than 625 horsepower, plus an eight-speed automatic transmission and a body that is more aerodynamic while producing enough downforce to optimize handling at high speeds. All of this is possible, according to Chevrolet, because the car is based on the highly advanced Corvette Stingray.

“The new Z06 delivers levels of performance, technology and design that rival the most exotic supercars in the world,” said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors North America. “And the Z06 leverages the engineering expertise of GM, offering the choice of two world-class transmissions, supercar performance without supercar fuel consumption and technologies that make it easier to fully enjoy the incredible experience of driving it.”

The supercharged engine is a first for the ZO6 nameplate, as is the available automatic transmission. Models with the automatic transmission also have paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel, allowing for quick and precise manual gear changes. Of course, for drivers who want a more traditional driving experience, a seven-speed manual transmission is available as standard equipment. Interestingly enough, Chevrolet used the aluminum frame from the Corvette Stingray while making few modifications to accommodate the more powerful car.

Anyone who is looking to push the performance envelope even further can go for the ZO7 Performance Package. It includes Michelin Super Sport Cup tires for improved handling, plus Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake discs that improve stopping performance and lower the car’s unsprung weight, further improving handling. Chevrolet test drivers have logged some of the fastest official times for a Corvette on various tracks, even surpassing times logged by the C6 Corvette ZR1.
