Chances are the Ford GT’s Wheels Cost More Than Your Car

When Ford launched the GT’s configurator, the beans were spilled about its optional carbon-fiber wheels, but the details remained under wraps at that time. Today, Ford has released all the information on the new lightweight wheels, save for the pricing—who are we kidding, these things likely cost more than the car you’re driving today.

Shockingly, this is not the first time that Ford has offered carbon wheels, as the Shelby GT350R comes standard with them. These are slightly different than the ones sitting beneath the mighty Mustang, as these wheels are only clear-coated in a gloss or matte finish while the Mustang’s are painted black. This clear-coat allows for easy viewing of the intricate weave in the carbon fiber.

The GT’s optional wheels replace the standard 8.5-by-20-inch and 11.5-by-20-inch aluminum wheels that come standard on the American supercar. While the aluminum rollers are super-light themselves, the carbon-fiber ones save more than 2 pounds per wheel. This reduction in weight not only lowers the curb weight of the vehicle, but it also improves handling and braking, ride, and reduces noises from the road.

Unfortunately, Ford didn’t get into just how much these optional rollers will cost. We do know that aftermarket carbon-fiber wheels typically run between $10,000 and $15,000 for a set, and OEM wheels are often priced significantly higher. So, I wouldn’t be shocked to learn that four new carbon-fiber GT wheels cost in excess of $20,000; more than your typical entry-level sedan.
