BMW has been teasing us with the possibility of an M4 GTS, and things came to a head with the reveal of the concept version of said 4 Series model. Today, BMW is putting the finish touch on this model by unveiling images and details about the production model.

The main attraction of the M4 GTS is its powerplant. It carries on with the same 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo straight-six as the standard M4, but BMW cranked the wick up to 493 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 442 pound-feet of twist between 4,000 and 5,500 rpm. These numbers represent increases of 68 horsepower and 36 pound-feet of torque. These big increases are thanks in part to the addition of a water-injection system – the M4 GTS is the first production road car with this system. Other changes to the 3.0-liter engine include a rigid closed-deck crankcase and twin-wire arc-sprayed coating on the cylinder walls.

This engine pairs with BMW’s seven-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic to deliver a 0-to-60 sprint time of just 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 189.5 mph. This makes the M4 GTS 0.2 seconds quicker to 60 mph and 33.5 mph faster than the standard M4 with the auto transmission.

With a more potent powerplant in place, M Performance moved on to improving the chassis of the M4 GTS. The control arms, wheel carriers, and axle subframes are now made from aluminum to cut weight, while an aluminum stiffening plate, carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastic (CFRP) strut-tower brace, and additional bolted connections between the subframe and body make for a stiffer front suspension. The rear suspension system loses 6 pounds by way of aluminum wheel carriers. Finally, the M4 gains a three-way adjustable coilover suspension to tie all of these components together into one track-ready rig.

BMW M rounded all of this out by tweaking the steering system 19-by-9.5-inch wheels up front, while 20-by-1.5-inch wheels live out back.

On top of all of the performance goodies, BMW M also worked on making the M4 GTS lighter than its M4 donor car. Some of its changes include a CFRP roof, hood, instrument panel support, trunk lid, splitter, rear apron and drive shaft, and lightweight M star-spoke wheels.

Inside the M4 GTS, its intentions are obvious, as it comes with aggressive M sports seats wrapped in Alcantara, a lightweight center console, no rear seats, a glass-fiber-reinforced-plastic rear bulkhead with carbon fiber sandwiched in, and other lightweight components.

All of these mentions of being lightweight may leave you wondering just how much lighter the GTS is. Well, according to BMW, this model will tip the scales at 1,585 kg (3,494 pounds) in the European Union specifications. That amounts to a 91-pound reduction when compared to the 3,585-pound curb weight of the automatic-equipped, U.S.-spec M4. The exact weight of the U.S.-spec M4 GTS will come at a later date.

BMW has yet to announce when the 2016 M4 GTS will hit dealers in the U.S., but it did mention that only 300 of the 700 M4 GTS model built globally will be for U.S. consumption. Pricing and an official release date should follow shortly.
