Subcompact cars, sometimes called “city vehicles,” are making a huge comeback in the marketplace. An increasing number of consumers are looking for inexpensive transportation, something that can easily be squeezed in parking areas otherwise only fit for a motorcycle. Another huge advantage of subcompacts is their gas sipping nature, especially as fuel prices continue to climb and concerns mount about vehicle emissions’ damage to the environment.

Saving money, squeezing in tight parking spaces and polluting less does not mean that you have to place fun on the altar of practicality. The following six subcompact cars all satisfy the above criteria, plus they are a blast to drive in multiple ways. You literally can have your cake and eat it too, marrying practicality with unabashed fun during your daily commute.

1. Ford Fiesta ST

The Fiesta has already gained quite the reputation, thanks to its high-quality interior finishes and sharp handling. Now Ford is kicking things up a few notches by introducing the potent Fiesta ST. The base model’s 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine gets a huge boost thanks to a turbo system pushing output to 197 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. The claimed 0 to 60 acceleration time is just a tick above 7 seconds, making it by far one of the quickest subcompact cars on the market today. Even with all of that extra power, the EPA estimates the Fiesta ST achieves 35 mpg on the highway.
