While we await the possible resurrection of the Mazdaspeed3, we will just have to settle for a mildly updated Mazda3 that features only a small performance update for 2017.

Mazda’s press release for this revamped model was very thin and made no mention of styling updates, but a close examination of the images revealed some mild changes. The most obvious of the changes is a rework of the nose. Up here, Mazda mildly redrew the grille and headlights, aligning the ends of the chrome grille outline with the innermost sections of the reworked headlights. It also widened the lower apron and added new fog lights and surrounds. All of these updates bring the Mazda3’s looks more in line with the successful CX-3.

Around back, Mazda also restyled the apron, inserting new, wider reflectors, restyling the bumper, and refreshing the bumper insert.

The only mechanical update for the 2017 Mazda3 is the introduction of the brand’s new G-Vectoring Control. This system is actually pretty cool as it adjusts the engine’s torque relative to the steering input, allowing the vehicle to perform as the driver intends in the corners, despite possible missteps by the pilot. This system also helps reduce torso sway for those in the car, leading to a more comfortable ride, and helps enhance traction in snowy or wet conditions.

How this system actually performs in real life is still up for debate, but we should get our chance to test it in the near future.

Mazda expects to have the 3 in showrooms later this year. There is still no mention of a Mazdaspeed version. Stay tuned for updates.
