2016 Ford Explorer Gets a Decked-Out Platinum Trim
In 2015, buyers had two options for top trim levels of the Ford Explorer. They could either opt for the more performance-oriented Sport trim or the more luxurious Limited trim. For 2016, the Explorer not only features an updated look, but it also gains a new, better-equipped top trim level known as the Platinum.
Where this new trim level really shines is inside the cabin. Its seats are wrapped up in Nirvana leather with micro-perforation for superior coolness and comfort. Also covered in this high-end hide are the instrument panel, console armrests, the door bolsters, and the upper door trim. The latter two pieces are actually in a quilted pattern for and even more upscale look.
Also gracing the interior is a heated steering wheel wrapped up in leather and wood, an Anthracite headliner, a 10-inch digital display in the instrument cluster, smart charging USB ports, real aluminum and ash wood trim, and fabric-wrapped A-pillars.
For the audiophiles of the family, the new Platinum trim comes standard with a new 500-watt Sony audio system.
On the outside, the 2016 Explorer Platinum gets a few distinguishing traits. These include 20-inch rollers with machined faces and tarnished dark pockets, a hands-free power tailgate, LED headlight surrounds, a dual-panel monroof, and silver-painted front and rear skid plates.
As with all SUVs, safety is key for the 2016 Explorer. The Platinum trim level pushes this even further with standard rain-sensing wipers, parallel parking assist, and front and rear cameras with washers.
Under the hood of the Platinum trim Explorer is the mighty 3.5-liter Ecoboost 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. Also included with this range-topping model is Ford’s intelligent four-wheel-drive system.
The new 2016 Explorer Platinum will start hitting showrooms in September 2015 at a starting price of $52,600, which is a $9.300 hike over the Sport trim.
