The midsize SUV realm is changing fast. Almost gone are all the body-on-frame models that dominated the class through the 80s, 90s and into the 2000s, and in come vehicles like the Highlander. This new wave of SUVs ride on front-drive platforms but have optional all-wheel drive, and they have just enough ground clearance to handle light off-road duties. While this may drive traditional SUV buyers nuts, it has given soccer moms and dads alternatives to dorky minivans. The Highlander is one of the best at spanning the gap between a minivan and an SUV, thanks to its selection of engine, fairly agile handling, seating for eight, and massive cargo capacity.
